TaRTS Course Description

What TaRTS is all about....

TaRTS provides a framework for delivering optimal care to injured patients who present to the Trauma Unit.

The TaRTS concept has been adopted by the West Yorkshire Major Trauma Network. It has been internally and externally peer reviewed and has received endorsement from the Chair of the RCN Emergency Care Association. There is also significant interest from Trauma Units in other Major Trauma Networks across the UK.

TaRTS conveys key learning in:

  • the management of the multiply injured major trauma patient
  • the approach to patients who may present to the ED with occult injury
  • adaptations to the approach for groups of patients with specific needs
  • overview of UK Major Trauma systems and the role of Trauma Units within the trauma network
  • human factors and team-working, with emphasis on the concept of 'exemplary followership'

The one day course format includes:

  • interactive and fully standardised lectures providing foundation knowledge in trauma care
  • clinical skills stations to practice key procedures
  • team moulages where candidates perform in their usual clinical role
  • structured debriefs with a focus on communication and cognitive processes
  • small group discussions to explore the wider complexities of trauma care

Our resources are unique...

  • presentations, moulages, skills and discussions are fully standardised and curriculum mapped
  • the content is relevant to all Trauma Units regardless of geographical location
  • the learning is applicable to the wider multi-disciplinary team
  • it is deliverable at any site with basic educational resources
  • the course requires minimal faculty training for delivery

The benefits to you?

  • assurance of Level 1 training for ED nurses, meeting national Major Trauma Nursing Group competencies
  • provides National Major Trauma Network assurance for the peer review measures
  • promotes enhanced communication across the multidisciplinary team
  • provides baseline knowledge and skills for those staff members who wouldn't ordinarily access higher level trauma training courses
  • all this with only a minimal funding commitment!
