Work Experience

Airedale NHS Foundation Trust logo
The purpose of a work experience placement is to help individuals decide on career options. Work experience is not reserved for young people, we invite applications from anyone wishing to explore alternative career options.

The areas and programme of work experience will be determined in relation to the likely career pathway of the students and will take into account age, academic record, interests and chosen academic pathway.

Which programme to apply for?

Programmes are run for aspiring doctors and people seeking other hospital-based work experience, with different application forms and application processes. Please read carefully the information on these pages for the type of work experience you would like to gain.

We are also happy to consider work experience requests from students undertaking a course not directly related to healthcare. For example, the video at the bottom of this page shows a group of Year 2 media students from Craven College filming with our therapy team.

ASPIRING DOCTORS PROGRAMME 2022

We are pleased to announce that this year we are once again able to run our aspiring doctors programme.

Each week will be made up of rotations around different departments each morning and afternoon, giving a broad experience
of different specialities.  There will also be a clinical skills session where candidates are given the opportunity to practice with
mannequins and in simulated scenarios.

The programme will run as four week-long sessions with successful applicants being allocated a place on one of these.

27th June to 1st July
4th to 8th July
11th to 15th July
18th to 22nd July

Please note that students cannot attend the aspiring doctors programme at any other time of the year.

The number of places on the programme is limited and will be allocated according to how well applicants meet the
entry criteria below.  A short personal statement is also required.

All applicants should be 16 or over, must have completed their GCSEs and received confirmed results of six Bs/6s including in
English, Mathematics and Science.  Also candidates should live and/or attend school within the local area (special circumstances
will be taken into consideration)

Applications for the 2022 programme are now closed.

All applicants will be contacted to inform them of the outcome of their application by Friday 13th May 2022.

If you have any queries or require further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

All applicants must:
  • have confirmed GCSE results.
  • live and/or attend a school within the defined local area of the Foundation Trust (Special circumstances may be taken into consideration but these should be discussed before submitting an application).

To demonstrate the Trust’s commitment to work experience we will try to work with individuals to offer placements across clinical areas that suit both the individual and the service area that they wish to work in.

We cannot provide a full list of locations for where work experience placements can be offered as this must, by necessity, vary according to the needs of the service. However, as an indication, the areas below would normally be able to accommodate a work experience student:
  • Cardiorespiratory
  • Child Care (Day Nursery/Hospital Play Team)
  • Dietetics
  • Midwifery
  • Nursing
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Radiology
  • Speech and Language Therapy

UPDATE - 19th March 2020 - We have taken the decision to close the application system until further notice. For individuals who have already had a placement confirmed for 2020, you will be contacted before your start date with regards to the status of your placement. We hope you can appreciate this decision during the Covid-19 pandemic when there is an increased demand on NHS services.

Airedale NHS Foundation Trust believes in the need to encourage individuals to take up work experience placements at the Trust. This is an accessible offer and can be taken up by all individuals aged 13 and above, subject to satisfactory employment checks and provided that you live and/or attend a school within the defined local area of the Foundation Trust (special circumstances will be taken into consideration).

To demonstrate the Trust’s commitment to work experience we will try to work with individuals to offer placements across non-clinical areas that suit both the individual and the service area that they wish to work in.

We cannot provide a full list of locations for where work experience placements can be offered as this must, by necessity, vary according to the needs of the service. However, as an indication, the areas below would normally be able to accommodate a work experience student:
  • Administration
  • AGH Solutions (primarily for Estates and Facilities placements)
  • Communications and Marketing
  • Information Services
  • Mandatory Training
  • Medical Education
  • Organisational Learning and Improvement
